" Fracking Wastewater Could Encourage Formation of Toxic Compounds During Drinking Water Disinfection "

Side One - Go Fracking! America can use their own oil and profit financially from it! America can increase the amount of working Americans which can lead to less people utilizing government funding!
Side Two - Stop Fracking! There has been studies proving that fracking is environmentally unhealthy. It has the potential to contaminate drinking water which can affect and cause unhealthy mutations for all living things on earth because everything is interconnected.
The Experiment - This article agrees with Side Two of the fracking controversy. There is a new study that was done by William A. Mitch of Stanford University in California. He and his colleagues were curious about the process that takes place when wastewater from fracking mixes with the chemicals used to clean drinking water.
He utilized mass spectrometry to measure the levels of disinfection by-products in the water and in treated river water without prior exposure to fracking. In samples of water containing .01% of watewater had 70 - 140% higher halocentonitriles. The amounts of some of these chemiccals are over the amount acceptable by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency). In Ozone treated water samples, the levels of bromate were above amount acceptable by EPA. Bromate is also a potential carcinogen. Wastewater made by fracking led to the increase in brominated and iodinated by-products. The researcher said that some of the chemicals from the fracking wastewater might actually be in lower levels so the by-products might be found at lower levels as well.
The Result - The study conclude that bromide and iodide in waste water may contribute to the formation of halogenated disinfection by-products. The amount of by-products exceeds the limitations put on drinking water treatment plans. It is said that the chlorine and chloramine used to disinfect the water can mix with the chemicals cause by fracking. This results in the formation of haloacetatic acids and trihalomethanes which are linked to cancer and nervous system problems.
A Possible Conclusion - Michelle L. Hladik, of the U.S. Geological Survey in California says one treatment can be removing the halides from the wastewater before it has a chemical reaction with the chemicals utilized for cleaning water. This study is useful for analyzing the connections of the chemicals and the amount of fracking wastewater.

This is very interesting! I always heard about the harm coming from fracking but I was not aware of the process nor the extent of the results. Michelle L. Hladik brought up a valid point. With the elimination of halides from wastewater before it can carry out a chemical reaction creating by-products, there is a possibility that both sides of the fracking controversy can win! Of course there are more aspects to take into consideration when looking at the bigger picture such as costs of workers, costs of the tools, and overall profit but it is a possibility that one day "Side One" and "Side Two" can be equally content.
ReplyDeleteI attended a lecture on fracking and found it super interesting. Your post was very informative and helped me revisit what fracking is and the potential harm it can have. I learned that we may be looking for a place for fracking right here in North Carolina, which is worrisome to me". Its scary to think of the most needed "nutrient" water could be damaged.
