New Fluorine Chemistry Research involving trifluoromethanide anion


        Many compounds that contain Fluorine are used in man made products. The trifluoromethyl group is very important to pharmaceutical drug development. It is also used in materials chemistry. The trifluoromethyl group can be found in drugs ranging from anti-depressants to anti-inflammatory. The trifluoromethanide anion is produced during a reaction that involves the trifluoromethyl group. This anion was believed to be an unstable and short lived anion for many years. However, a recent study has shown that a form of the trifluoromethanide anion that is stable and long lived exists! This research was conducted successfully by USC Loker Hydrocarbon Institute chemists.

            The results from this research can provide paths for future medicinal and materials chemistry research. This research could even have potential for creating new organic compounds. Organic compounds are used in the production of things like pharmaceuticals, and agricultural and industrial materials. When Fluorine is added to organic compounds, it helps to control certain properties that affect the performance of whatever the material is. If the opportunity to make new organic compounds arises from the use of this trifluoromethanide anion, the possibilities of improving drugs and agricultural materials could significantly increase. Considering the importance of drugs and agricultural materials in modern society, this could have a significant affect!
