Ice is present in nature everywhere, found within terrestrial and astrophysical environments alike, and contains many atoms and molecules trapped inside it. On Earth's, seasonal ice and permafrost-covered regions represent a vast reservoir for the collection, concentration and release of environmental and trace gases, encompassing national security concerns about the persistence and fate of intentionally released dangerous chemical species.
A team of researchers of University of Chicago and Loyola University has discovered a new mechanism they call "stable energetic embedding" of atoms and molecules within ice, interact with and become embedded beneath ice surfaces. The mechanism will be able to see what kind of molecules are trapped in ice and therefore be prepared to deal with the type of molecules inside of it.
