Chapter 5, Problem 1; Sapling Problem

The homework problem that I choose to explain is Chapter 5, number 1. And it states: Calculate the degrees of unsaturation in a compound with the molecular formula C3H6 and draw two possible structures, including the Hydrogen atoms, for the formula.

Well, in order to calculate the degree of unsaturation, one must use the formula. This formula is

# C's (2) + 2-X-N-# H's
                    2


Once one knows the degree of unsaturation, which is 1 in this case, we are aware that we hold either a double bond or ring, or both depending on the degree. Or, you can have two different isomers as you do in this case, one for each a ring and a double bond. Carefully counting the number of Carbons and hydrogens, one must draw skeletal structures to match up with the formula given. The images that result are show above.

  1. Great post! Finding the degrees of unsaturation is a key part of finding out what type of compound you have in IR or Mass Spectroscopy questions!
