Sapling Learning - Chapter 14, Problem 18

1-hexan-3-ol

1-hexan-3-ol is the correct answer choice in which its IR matches the given spectrum due to several components of the compound. Looking at the structure of the compound to the right, there are several structurally unique aspects that can be identified. Such structures unique to the compound include an O-H bond, a C=C bond and a –CH=CH2 group. The spectrum correctly shows both O-H stretching (3200cm-1 - 3600cm-1) and C=C (1700cm-1) stretching absorptions. Furthermore the peaks at 910cm–1 and 990 cm–1 confirm the presence of a –CH=CH2 group. Therefore, with these aspects of the compound accurately identified in the given spectrum, it can be assumed that 1-hexan-3-ol is the correct answer.
