Careers for Chemist-Entrepreneurship
On October 17,2014, Dr. Croatt led a panel discussion on different careers for chemists. Each panelist basically discussed their background as far as where they started, how they got to where they are now and the successes and failures they've come across over the years. The discussion was very insightful and motivating. Each panelist used what they learned in school and found their own niche within the chemistry fields. Dr. Pearce was considered crazy for the ideas he had because at that time it was unheard of and he made a success out of his passion for creating scents and concocting different food additives. They also gave great business advice. Each of them started their own company in their own right. One of the main themes that was stressed is that you have to have the passion and the drive to make your vision come to life. It's not an easy road but it's up to you to make that decision. When choosing between working for a major company or a small business you have to see where you fit in best and will you be able to make your vision come to life. They also stressed the major responsibility associated with running a business and that even though you may be the boss, you have to be able to perform all roles within a company. Even though this seminar was geared towards chemistry majors, it can apply to all career fields; you have to have passion for whatever it is you decide to do career wise.

This sounds like it was a great seminar, I wish I could've gone to it. It's interesting to me, because many people often think that getting a degree in chemistry or biology somehow gives you more job security, or better odds at using your degree after college, but even though you are able to do the work does not mean this was the work you wanted to do. I like how the presenters seem aware of this and encourage attendees to figure out not only wants available, but whats appealing to them as chemists.
