Earth-abundant solar cells

On September 26, Dr. Jakubikova from NC State University held a seminar about using iron complexes as photosensitizers. These complexes play a big role in DSSC's (dye sensitized solar cells) because they anchor to the chromophores. Since a certain iron complex is so similar to Ru, they can be successfully used interchangably as photosensitizers.
 The lab uses density functional theory and quantum dynamics to understand how modifying the ligands changes the energy output in the electron transfer sequence. It is possible that all of the first row transition metals can be used.
