I attended the seminar on November 14th. The speaker was Dr. Kenneth Brown a professor at Georgia Tech. His speech was on ion trap quantum computers for chemistry.
The purpose of developing quantum computers is to make faster calculations and to solve problems too difficult for the traditional computer. The development of this computer will be very beneficial to chemistry because it would be able to calculate molecular properties through quantum mechanics. The quantum computer is very beneficial to science, however, the task still remains of how to construct this computer.
Dr. Brown highlighted the necessary resources required to make the quantum computer. The main topic of discussion was about quantum bits or qubits. Information is encoded as qubits which can exist in superposition.
Dr. Brown, his students, and other scientist are diligently working to build the quantum computer. Hopefully there is a breakthrough within the next 5 to 10 years and a functional quantum computer is made.
