Halogen Bonding- Fundamentals and Applications


Dr Bill Pennington is a Professor and Director of the Molecular Structure Center at Clemson University. On November 7th 2014, he came to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro to talk about research he has been conducting on halogen bonding. The seminar was split into four parts: Halogen bonding (X-bonding), X-bonding periodic table, Polyiodides and metapolyiodides and application of halogen bonding. Halogen bonding had previously been called incipient valence shell, outcasts of our present chemical system, charge-transfer interactions and/or donor-acceptor reactions amongst other names that he listed in his power point. Halogen bonding was defined as non-covalent interaction involving halogens as acceptors of electron density; hydrogen acts as acceptor of electron density similar to hydrogen bonding. 
Each iodine reacts with iodine in halogen bonding thus higher boiling point than fluorine, chlorine, bromine. Applications of halogen bonding include: thyroid Hormone Receptor X bonds, Magnetic and conducting materials, Liquid crystals, Solid state crystals, catalytic synthesis, Non-particle self assembly. An example of a substance with halogen bonding is tetraiodoethylene.
