Halogen Bonding
On November 7th
Dr. Pennington researcher from Clemson University came to discus his research
on halogen bonding. Halogen bonding is something that has been around for a long
time but did not get a permanent name until the 90’s. Dr. Pennington has done a lot of research and
along with that many publications to show for. His main focus during the
seminar was crystal chemistry. Crystal chemistry has a lot of involvement of
Lewis acid and Lewis base interactions. IUPAC said that it is a non-covalent
reaction involving halogens as acceptors of electron density. X is a halogen (Lewis
Base) D is any electron donor and Y is a carbon, halogen, nitrogen, etc. The halogen specifically acts as an electrophilic species. Very similar to hydrogen bonding the interaction is very selective and also pretty
strong. Because it is selective and strong it makes it perfect for crystal
chemistry/design. Another interest that Dr. Pennington spoke about was the
structural description of amorphous material, multi-crystals, and
single-crystals designs through a technique called scattering. Overall I found this seminar very interesting I never knew that from halogen bonding you could get these amazing crystal designs.
