Plants need candy too

Fructose is the chemical that supplies sugar to plants. It's the reason why fruits and vegetables get their sweet tastes. Fructose is 1.2 times sweeter than regular processed sugar, but it only contributes a small amount to the American diet compared to other sugars like syrups and starches. A lot of people don't know that high fructose corn syrup and crystalline fructose syrup are two different things. High fructose corn syrup is processed because it's been mixed with glucose and fructose. However crystallized fructose is the real deal. It's 100% fructose! So for those of you going trick or treating tonight, don't be fooled by the candy wrappers into thinking your getting pure fructose in your candy. You stand there and demand the crystallized stuff! It is after all the best of the best. Crystallized fructose is sweeter, has a better texture, and produces better tasting candy. Happy fructose hunting!

  1. Thats a good point! A lot of people assume that all sugar is fructose and the sugar that is in most of our foods, candy, etc is the same molecule! Trick or treaters be aware!

  2. This made me look forward to actually receiving candy just so I can look at the wrapper! Also, this was very informative and fun to read.

  3. This is really cool. I didnt realize so much of candy was made up of fructose. Would you happen to have read something on why is it so difficult for humans to digest?

  4. That is interesting! I wonder why the crystalline fructose is actually sweeter. Maybe it has something to do with structure.
