The natural product Vancomycin

*18 chiral centers, 1 chiral axis, and 1 chiral plane

Vancomycin, C66H75Cl2N9O24, is produced from Streptomyces orientalis (found in the soil from India and Indonesia) and is used to fight against bacterial infections; it is considered a glycopeptide antibiotic. This natural product is used to treat inflammation of the intestines. The medication is bought in capsule form. Vancomycin is referred to as the "drug of last resort" because its usually used when other antibiotics have been unsuccessful. This is why the drug is for penicillin-allergic patients.

  1. I enjoyed reading your post. The pictures really caught my attention. You did a great job of displaying vancomycin. I think it is great that there are other antibiotics available to people who are allergic to penicillin. Great Post!
