It has psychoactive and stimulant effects that make us feel more alert and content by making the brain release b-endorphins. Endorphins, as we know are the neurotransmitters responsible for our feelings of pleasure. Many compounds can be derived from phenylethylamine and be used as stimulants, anoretics, antidepressants , decongestants and bronchodialators, among other uses.
But most importantly, in addition to theobromine, phenylethylamine is one of the compounds found in chocolate; which if you are like me, you consider the most important food group. Of course, it this compound that gives chocolate it's ability to make us feel fabulous and be one of the most loved foods and flavors in the world! And that my dear readers is what makes phenylethylamine my favorite organic molecule!
