Tyrosine.. Do you like cheese??

My favorite organic molecule is Tyrosine, one of the amino acids. Our bodies use it to produce chemical messengers that are involved in conditions related to the brain.Tyrosine, Tyr, can be found in food products as well; this is why I'm mainly interested in it. Its found in foods like dairy products, nuts, meats, wheat, etc. My favorite snacks are foods that contain almonds, bananas, and cheese!

Besides being in yummy foods, this molecule has many medical purposes! Tyrosine is taken to aid depression, narcolepsy, ADHD, PMS, Alzheimer's disease, staying alert from drowsiness, etc. A 150 mg/kg/day dosage could be prescribed to improve the alertness of an individual who hasn't slept for an extended period of time.

The name of this molecule was derived from the Greek word turos, which means cheese.

Who would have thought that a organic molecule, produced in our bodies, could have so many  uses!

  1. In a class I took this past spring, Nutrition Through the Life Cycle, we talked about tyrosine in its important role in managing PKU. In addition to all the benefits you listed, supplementing with tyrosine can also help people suffering from PKU. Pretty awesome stuff.
